The assignment for this project was to choose a current war conflict and design an ideogram to represent that conflict. After going through many different designs, I finally decided upon using a razor blade, with the inner-cutout of the blade being a branch of the coca plant. Replacing one of the leaves on the branch with the silhouette of Colombia, I decided to use the razor because of its two sharp sides to represent both sides of the conflict with the blood shed and, more literally, its use for cutting up cocaine. After designing the ideogram, we were told to create mosaics using both positive and negatives of the design– cutting them up into 16 squares and rotating them and reorganizing them. While the first mosaic uses only positive squares, and the last uses only negatives, the middle three contain combinations of 12 and 4, 8 and 8, and 4 and 12 (number of positives squares to negative squares used in the composition).
