Plaster Monument

The point of this plaster monument project was to make a monument for someone important in our lives. For mine, I chose my friend Myles. As a starting idea, I immediately knew that I wanted to use aljasafe to mold my hand into the classic “rocker” position, because of the detail the material could get. However, after pouring the plaster into the mold, it did not fill the entirety of it and left the two middle fingers… fingerless. Although at first I decided that I wanted to re-cast these two fingers and attach them to my three-fingered hand, I remembered the year that Myles started to take his drumming to the next level, and would constantly have blisters and scabs on his hands from practicing. Remembering this, I saw my mistake as an opportunity and used hot glue to create the dripping blood coming down from the two nubs to represent his sacrifices and how hard he’s had to work to get to where he is now. In creating a base for the hand, I decided to make a drum head: an Evans ’56 – the kind Myles uses. The addition of six bolts to the head of the drum helped suspend it and create the illusion that it was more of a whole drum rather than just the head. I decided to make this monument for Myles because I honestly don’t think I would even be at school for design if it were not for him. His ability to continually push himself further and further, and never accept an “ok” performance on top of his incredible friendship to me allowed me to take my art to the next level and give my work an entirely new meaning. Not a day goes by where I don’t think of Myles and push myself to create the best art I possibly can because of him.
