Assignment Intro
This assignment required us to make a wood necklace using mechanical connectors without using glue and we are allowed to use scrap wood pieces and machines from the Making Center to help to finish the assignment.
Rough Draft
First, I started with a model with hot glue to figure out the rough shape of my final product.
In this trial, I learned how to use driller to drill a hole and how to operate those scary machines in the wood shop. The hardest part was to connect each copper circle. It was so hard to bend it tightly and I have to use pliers to press again and again. Besides, it is a thrilling experience to use the sander. Before the staff warned me about not to sand little wood pieces by the circular sander, I always did that to make the piece looks thinner. Sure I will never do that again because to do that, my finger is millimeters away from getting chopped off.
Final Draft (Product pics and styling pics included)
For the final draft, I rearranged the skeleton and the bars around it to make it more dimensional. Besides I applied twisted copper wires to make sure it can be bent to make obstacles which helped to locate the little bones and keep a distance from the skeletons
Reflection
This is a innovative experience to create a wood necklace without using glue. I enjoyed doing that and I spend almost two whole afternoon on experimenting and first draft final draft and all that jazz. I also found tricks of using drillers, saws and sanders. Quite helpful and meaningful as a practice of mechanical connector and wood shop machines.
