Assignment #2- 3 TED TALKS

Assignment Intro

This assignment mainly instructed us to reflect on the assigned videos which tell us about the relationship between design and other concepts or elements.

-Reflection-

1-Ross Lovegrove

Mr. Lovegrove’s saying about organic design is quite an inspiration. At the end of the video, he is demonstrating his own work, introducing his fat-free concept. I am quite impressed by his DNA idea using acronym to represent design, nature and art and his design of DNA stairs showing up at the end. Sometimes employing extreme subtle things to construct large items can be surprisingly effective. It helps me understand 3-D models are not only in the magnificent construction, but can also be found everywhere in the nature

2-Paola Antonelli

Quite agree with Ms. Antonelli’s saying about designers are the biggest synthesizers in the world and designers need to be mavericks since designers take current econ condition, materials and sustainability issues into consideration as factors and they need to be different from the main stream to have a progressive sight and bring people forward. The whole talk is dynamic and really demonstrate the relationship between design and science. 3-D design is closely related to science and via this talk, I better understand the relationship between these two disciplines.

3-Alice Rawsthorn

I agree with design is originated from a dream. Interesting point about Ying Zheng analyzing his contribution to design compared to his fame as a emperor and careerist. The angle, analyzing who people may called villains, is attracting but not reasonable. As she pointed out, people like Ying and Edward was not on their mind to design and after the industrialization, design started to be formalized and professionalized and that kind of design is the definition of modern design. Back in the old time, it is their need as the stimulus to drive them to invent some kind of strategies. Logo and the skull flag is totally two things from two different fields with different purposes. Although I hold different opinions against the talk, but I think its angle to analyze some non-conscious design is really cool, I can use that pattern of idea to inspire me about my 3-D work.
