Assignment #9 – Foam board 3D Structure

-Assignment Intro-

Stage 1-Research

When I have the instruction, I immediately thought of geographic contour line.

From that, I expanded my thoughts to artistic things made in the geographic contour line form

I found it really cool to make a face with that kind of technology and I found an artist named Patrick Cabral.

After that, I associatively related this characteristic into another scene–the inside of a luxury hotel or a mansion.

These are the inside of luxury hotels and I have been to the scene in the first picture–Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore.

Stage 2-Paper models

Stage 3-foam board product making

-process-

I was inspired by the movie V for Vendetta. When I was watching it days before, the scene that Eve is about to operate the train with bombs and V’s body to the parliament building really moved me. That powerful scene exhibits a resolution a weak woman shows to end the war between the government and its people. That is why I wanted to make a bun out of my product: a submarine and a fading face of a woman with an antiwar sign in her mouth.

I tried different shapes to convey my thoughts about antiwar: adding a flag, putting on a piece of broken “glasses”, etc. I finally used a half antiwar sign in the mouth to show a sense of “on the tip of the tongue” but did not make it. Besides, for connection, I applied toothpick and the squeeze-in method.

-Reflection-

I learned a lot from this foam board art piece making since I have done a lot of experiments with that new material. It seems when I try to cut the board into an acute angle, the content between to layers always slips out, leaving nothing for my toothpick to stick into, which is extremely annoying. The progress is not fluent at all. I tried different thoughts to express my theme and most of them failed. It was a great challenge to my patience and when the foam board falls apart, it was like a heart attack. It is so fragile thus it is super annoying and hard to stabilize. I probably will not use it for projects later.
