Title: Oasis

Media and Technology: Virtual reality

Dimension: Virtual reality headset, 20 ft by 20 ft room

Description: I am creating a stop motion animation. It takes place in a desolate desert and it follows a character on their strange adventures through the landscape. The viewer of the project will wear a VR headset in an empty 20’ by 20’ room. They will follow the character in the animation and make decisions by interacting with the environment to experience the full story. They will need to move around the room and open doors. Only one person will be able to experience it at a time. As a result of “puzzle solving” the viewer will be able to experience the story in full length an see the interesting ending. In addition, they will be able to look around and focus on smaller elements in detail, which is more difficult to do when simply watching an animated video on a screen. The viewer becomes a second character involved with the content that only exists when experienced in VR, however the plot and visuals remain almost exactly the same and simply pause and play a loop like sequence until the viewer completes the correct actions (like following the character) to see the video in full. The content simply takes another format, but creates an entirely different experience.

Benefits and outcome: By experiencing the animation in the form of virtual reality viewers will have a more interactive experience. One of the goals of my animation is to immerse the viewer into the landscape of my visual world. I feel that by using VR people will become fully immersed in the environment, because it will respond to their actions. This immersion is one of the main goals of my animation and it will be enhanced by this technology.
