Required Materials 3: John Zorn, “Khebar”

My family is multicultural, so we have quite a few traditions that we find ourselves sharing amongst our friends and other family members. As a Swede, Smörgåsbord (literally meaning sandwich table) was a common family occurrence for holidays and special occasions. Each household would bring one or more dishes that would go onto one central table and be passed around for a wonderfully filling meal. Following this, other adopted traditions would come into play. My uncles, who are musicians, encouraged us to “jam out” and have a little impromptu music session that included live singing and guitar in an assortment of different musical genres. Recently, my mother would bring that Smörgåsbord to the neighborhood where we live in the form of a “Last Monday” dinner, where members of the neighborhood would gather in our backyard or dining room for a similar potluck style meal.
