FASHION SEMINAR Reflection

1) what was the most important lesson that you learnt throughout the research process in your seminar class?

I learned that picking a topic that you are genuinely interested in is the most important part of the research. During my research process it was my passion for the topic that motivated me the whole time. Without the enthusiasm I would’t be able to compete the paper.

2) how did you approach looking for sources? how easy/difficult was it and how did the class influence your process?

It was frankly fantastic that Laura, my professor, suggested me to use social media as a source. Since my topic has a lot to do with internet and social media, they are actually the best source for me to do research on while I can analyse what I see. I am very grateful that this is approved because from my past experiences social media would’ve been a “informal” and “unreliable” source. Being able to be creative during the research is definitely something very fresh to me and also what I’m looking for studying in Parsons.

3) once you started drafting your essay, did you change your topic or did you change the direction you wanted to take in your essay? what role did your sources and the class discussion have in shaping your opinion and your essay?

My topic did change since the original on is overly similar to an existing case study. It was mainly my professor that inspired me of my new topic. My experience while discussing with her is beyond lovely. Laura has always put effort in helping students out and she really gave me very helpful advices. I am also thankful that she has the knowledge of what my research topic is about, it makes the communication a lot easier.

4) what surprised you the most about the process of writing the final essay? what was the most challenging part?

It actually surprised me when I finished my first draft in just a few hours and stuck because I couldn’t think of anything else to add. It was a good process and the progress was made efficiently. However it was difficult to improve the paper when you think you already have everything.

5) how is your seminar work connected to your studio work? what do they have in common?

I did a photoshoot series and later a short film about my sneakers for the studio class. The project is based on my passion for sneakers because in my research paper I came to a conclusion that it is enthusiasm that makes a successful story. The initial idea was just photo shooting me in all of my sneakers in different setting. However during the process of shooting and editing I realized that this is a fantastic opportunity for me to make a short film, which I’ve always been interested in trying. In conclusion I just wanted to grab this chance and really devote into doing something about things I love.
