MOODBOARD

For my collage, I used elements from the 1940s poster in Shanghai, combined with the cosmos and futuristic background.

GARMENTS

I picked 3 garments from beacon’s closet, I decided to use the Qipao as the base, cotton coat as sleevesand fur hat as collar.

FINAL SKETCH

For the sketch, I also did a collage with my hand sketch, which also allows me to have a better idea of how the embellishments will look on the garments.

PROCESS

First, I used the seam ripper to rip off the edges and zippers that I want to get rid off. Then, I measured my body, and cut the dress into the length that I wanted.

After that, I cut out and restitched the front part of the dress, also added a zipper on the side.

Then, I took 2 piece of fabric from the cotton coat, cut them into cap sleeve patterns, then sew them onto the dress.

Next, I cut the hat into a strip, and sew it around the collar of it.

Finally, I used safety pins and chains to add more definitions and highlights to the piece.

The final piece was photographed in Central Park.

REFLECTION

I started off with picking the garments in the thrift shop to see what pieces matches together. Then, I chose the dress as my main piece, and created a collage based on that. For this project, I learned how to sew a zipper, and how to make cap sleeves through youtube tutorials. I’m pretty satisfied of the final result.

For my Seminar story is about a Chinese woman who immigrated to the states for her family, and her son sold her dress to a thrift shop after she passed away.
