Bridge 4- ‘Final Interventions’

LENOX HILL

What is the problem and who are it’s users?

Upon my multiple visits to Lenox Hill I noticed piles of black trash bags lined up outside the houses. After further research into the history of the neighbourhood I came to realise that the racial segregation of people was more prominent in real time than it showed in the census statistics. Thus combining the two problems, the users of my proposed solution include all social groups that reside in Lenox Hill irrespective of race, gender, status etc.

There are also a lack of green spaces in the neighbourhood. Thus I knew from before that I wanted to place the solution in a green open public space.

My Design Process

After analysing the chosen problem further I used SCAMPER to explore my ideas and possible solutions that addressed the problem of garbage as well as the racial “taboo” or divide in Lenox Hill.

This brainstorming lead to the development of multiple sketches and variations of the final idea. Then to give them actual form and to test it’s structure I started to construct prototypes out of cardboard.  Soon I evaluated it’s result and began to build the final 3D model along with it’s other accompaniments.

Design options, constraints and limitations

During the steps of brainstorming I contemplated constructing a functional model that eliminated the visibility of trash of the sidewalks. However after much deliberation I decided to take it one step further and design a green building that worked as a trash disposal unit and further energised the “Green Screen”. While doing so, I faced limitations in the form of knowledge regarding the functioning of the trash collection in Lenox Hill. Not having enough information forced me to assume or invent the missing gaps.

Validating my design and thinking further

In order to validate the success or failure of my design I would like to propose the model to someone from the neighbourhood itself and hear their views and perspectives on the issue of garbage as well as my solution to it. If I could go further, I would like to work with an engineer and design the technical aspect of the building including the functioning of the solar panels and work on other innovative features.

My Final Intervention- Pitch

In order to solve the problem of over flowing trash in Lenox Hill combined with the racial divide that exists in the community, I have designed a green solar powered trash disposal unit in the visual appearance of a greenhouse. This building further powers a new tablet called the “Green Screen” that calculates the type and amount of trash. This technology would help increasing recycling of products instead of them landing up in landfills due to lack of awareness. Lastly, to strengthen the bond of the residents of the neighbourhood I have designed a flier that advertises a Community Clean Drive in Lenox Hill. The flier can be distributed manually or digitally. My intention is to bring the people together towards a common cause- health, cleanliness and sanitation of their home.

Reflection

I found Bridge 4 to be extremely interesting yet challenging. Since it was my first time making an actual 3D model I wanted it to be neat and represent the project well. It was nice to look back at all the research we had collected and finally compile it all into one final piece. I wish I had more time to add more details to the structure yet I am proud of how much I learnt in the process and can’t wait to work on and refine my skills further!
