Collage/montage

For this project, I took the prompt as an opportunity to explore the past and future of the artist Rose Wylie. I explored her past through interviews and her past work. I took the context of her past and present to imagine a future for her. Although she might not live for much longer, her art will leave a legacy and its themes will continue to impact the world, which is what I wanted to illustrate. I created one analog collage of her past, drawing upon themes that were present in the various interviews and videos, such as home, nature, and calm. I also created a digital collage of her future, correlating it with the collage of her past, I imagined what themes would be inspirational for her and her art in the future. What I wanted to emphasize visually in the two pieces was also a large aspect of Wylie’s art. She painted on unprimed canvas and often left large sections untouched. I recreated this visually, through the digital and analog works by leaving surrounding background space, emulating an aspect of Wylie’s work.

For my process, I began with the analog collage, I wanted to create the works in chronological order. I found inspirational images in old issues of Architectural Digest, as well as various websites, even some photos of Rose Wylie’s home, found from an interview published by The New York Times. I layered the cutout images and objects together to visually illustrate how involved with her surroundings Wylie had been in her past. I used a glue stick to collage the images, scissors, and a utility knife to cut out the images. For the digital collage, I found images from various websites and collaged them on photoshop using different filters and layering techniques.

Overall, I enjoyed this project. I learned about how to frame a past and future through 2-dimensional media. I enjoyed the research part of the process the most.
