Still Life / Vanitas

Assignment:

For this we were directed to create a piece that was a still life with a deeper message and theme.

Concept and reflection:

For my piece I was inspired by Sari Shryack to create a still life that captured objects from a point in time from my past as a teenage girl. I chose objects that were important to me over the course of my senior year in high school.

I learned a lot about myself as an artist and what themes and colors I like to work with.  I think this exercise was beneficial to my work and practice in learning how to capture seemingly uninteresting objects in a more reflective connotation.

Assignment:

We were directed to create various perspective drawings for this assignment, a series of still life table top drawings of objects, an in class drawing of a space, and an out of class drawing of a space.

Reflection:

I learned and practiced my skills of drawing from one or two point perspective for this assignment. I hadn’t done an assignment like this since the beginning of high school and it was beneficial to my practice to reintegrate this method of drawing into my skillset,

Drawing of Cloth

pencil and charcoal on paper, 18 x 24

Concept and reflection:

For this piece, we were directed to create a drawing of cloth. For this work, I wanted to convey the idea of light passing through and the effect it has on different materials. I had previously tried to depict light and shadow on curtains and had not been successful so I wanted to try again. I found this image online that I was visually drawn to and decided to use it for this piece.

I challenged myself by creating this piece and I am happy with the result. I also am visually drawn to the work I created just as much as the original photo.

Final Project: Visual Essay

For this project, we were directed to create an accordion-style book of a visual essay illustrating and conveying a message about a social issue.

Here is my final book:

Concept:

I wanted to create a book displaying the nuances of the American dream and the interior decor trends of different decades, depicting the contrast between what was attainable for white Americans and what people of color and immigrants had to deal with through the different decades. I painted gouache on translucent paper over printed out newspaper articles through the 50s-00s displaying different takes on the American dream.

Reflection:

I definitely have taken a liking to create books and also enjoyed this process and final piece. I think my concept was conveyed through my work and I like the aspect of mixing mediums. I learned how to construct a book from start to finish and how to illustrate my ideas in a multitude of spaces.

Hybrid Self Portrait

For this assignment we were directed to create a hybrid self portrait based on a concept we created.

My process photos:

For my concept I wanted to create a piece based on different climates and the relationship to objects in our everyday lives, for example in this specific project, a fridge.

Here is my final project:

Reflection:

I learned about digital and analog collage through this project. I enjoyed finding mediums and images to work with and integrating them into drawings that I created.
