Field Trip / Climate Justice

Walking around East River Park was very eye-opening. The demolition of the current park due to the implementation of flood prevention walls is like seeing the effects of climate change. What was the most astonishing to me was the trash boat that we saw go by in the East River. It was odd to me because it seemed like some of the trash from the ship could’ve quickly fallen off into the river and contributed even more to climate change. I saw that there was a common theme of demolition and reconstruction in this area and the trash boat made me think about that. Not only are the effects of climate change going to have an effect on New York but the reconstruction efforts will have an effect on surrounding areas where the debris and leftover material will be deposited. Overall, the sea wall reconstruction/demolition efforts are sad to see. Many historical landmarks are going to be or have been destroyed, many places that people consider home. These are only the beginning efforts being made, over the next few decades, I think more and more reconstruction will happen all over new york in an effort to protect the vulnerable city from the hazardous effects of climate change.
