Puffed Away

In my initial thought, I was planning to take series of films which based on “smoke,” as well other elements that relate to the idea “smoke.” As I tried out the experiments in the exercise, I saw shadows moving and cars passing through the streets, the white smoke that was coming out of the manhole grabs my attention mostly, even though it showed up less than two seconds. I started thinking about the form of the gas, floating in the air which gives you a sense of feeling that it is released. As it vanishes so quickly, releasing is something reaches its maximum and start to radiate in the space; later the white smoke is gone, it could also be seen as escaping or fleeing act. As the work in progress, I had built up few scenarios that related to each other and consisted an unusual pattern, I considered this as “adding layers.” The theme is around smoke and its movement, although I have found it brings up strong images visually and individually, it’s quite exciting to see it cooperate with other elements and compose a more robust narrative. The actions base on the movement of smoke, or at least they imitate the process of floating smoke and revolve it like the merry-go-round. I used different lighting to create an atmosphere of tension and crisis. The subtitles are in the signal red; they give the direction of the progress in the film. Personally, the moment that smoke explodes or burst out of something is the release of pressure. As one blows the last puff of smoke, it almost makes me feel the smoke is freed from the substance, and it finished its journey in the realm of mortal life.I felt that it is important to give meanings to the ordinary things that surround us, and alter it a special gift in real life.I have learned to develop the connections or discontinuance between cuts and to create the tremendous visual effect.
