I am richard, and I am currently enrolled in BFA at Parsons School of Design, class 2020. I am interested in painting, sculpture and photography! I love experimenting with all kinds of art, but technology is my weakness. My favorite artists are Hans Bellmer, Gustav Klimt, Thomas Woodruff, Kahlo Frida, Yayoi Kusama, Ai Weiwei, and Pablo Picasso. I love watching films and enjoying in the scenarios.
I wish that I could create more artwork and build up an unique style of my very own at Parsons. I believe that a good piece of your work is an embodiment of your personality. Sincerity and nature are my only pursuits.
Artistic Statement
I wake up by the sunlight with my dreams still floating in my head. I realize that I
have to get up and record my dreams immediately otherwise I’ll forget them. Usually,
my dreams don’t consist of stories, so when they do they become precious memories.
They are elusive and surreal. I find the environments in my dreams to be reoccurring
and familiar, just like the summertime after primary school in Brighton, my paradise. It’s
the scene of the beach, and the fairground Pier zooms out. I could capture the cool salty
smell and sea mew’s sound echoing in the wind. If I am not able to find that kind of
space, I will create it. There are no excuses for stopping me from bringing my dreams to
reality. Putting effort into what I’m focused on is the most valuable thing. To pursue my
dreams is worth the responsibility. There was a time in the past when I couldn’t face the
true me, the person in front of the mirror. I wouldn’t dare to shout my feelings out. I now
feel more confident to confront the real me through elusive moments and stories. I’m
afraid that if I’m not doing this now, I will forget about it, and a piece of me will be lost. I
want to hold on to these fleeting images forever to break through an endless silence.
These feelings drive me to sculpt, to paint, and to take photographs. I strive to create a
narrative based on these memories through my sculptures. My process is about the
relationships between the objects I create and their surroundings, which eventually turn
into an installation. As a compliment to my three-dimensional work, photography has
challenged my ability to tell a story using a representational image. I’m very curious
about what I will be able to describe through the non-literal form. My paintings and
sculptures are influenced by the diverse cultures and countries that I have lived in over
the past years in my life. I try to depict this collage of diverse memories and cultures
through inventing fairy tales and surrealist forms. My memories are held with each touch
of the brush on a surface. I often use fingers, feet, or even ears to paint because that
brings me more sensation of telling my heart’s tales. I feel that I am completed when I
am painting without considering the limitations of who I am and what I might become. I
am an ephemeral being, and I am aware that my lifespan does not allow me to be with
time forever. If I am not chasing what I want right now, then when? Later in my lifetime
as an artist, I hope to get to know the best state of myself. I hope to allow myself to be
free from regret and fear.
