Waste Material Exploration Project

SLIDE 1

Process from waste to final product

SLIDE 2

1. selected material- disposable hot drink cups because I drink a lot of coffee and it is a material I consume multiple times a day without even thinking of it as a waste.

2. collected material- use about 3 cups a day, everyday! that’s about 21 cups thrown away in just one week!

3. cups sometimes made out of post consumer material, but have plastic liner, and sometimes styrofoam cover

SLIDE 3

1. I cut the cup into strips

2. wove the strips

3. put them in water- plastic lining water resistant

4. stacked the cups- texture

5. cut a slit and folded sections

6. applied watercolor

7. applied paint

8. wove copper wire with material

9. burned

SLIDE 4

1. I started with sketches and brainstormed ideas

I asked myself: What do I need? What could I make that I would actually purchase myself?

Problem: jewelry in a bowl- necklaces tangle, hard to find what I want

Solution: jewelry organizer

2. basic prototype- stacked two cups (like a tree). bottom one for support and to add height, top one cut into sections to hang jewelry on

3. resembled pineapple- design aspect

sketched out prototype with a fun play on the object

4. developed prototype/early stage of final product

SLIDE 5

1. Roommate uses the product for one day

She used two versions 1. had thinner sections woven with copper wire 2. (pineapple) thicker sections

2. feedback

thinner sections too flimsy, difficult for jewelry to stay on. No intentionally designated place to put jewelry.

pineapple, stronger piece overall. holds more jewelry, places for jewelry seem more intentional

FIX: too light on the bottom half and heavier on the top half makes it fall over and knocks all the jewelry off. Needs to be sturdier.

I went back and put a mason jar inside the bottom cup and closed the cup with a lid from the togo cup. Then, I painted to camouflage and sealed with glue.
