“I Am”

Topic:Gender Equality – Woman’s Rights

Inspiration:From HeForShe Movement

Medium:Painting and Video

Description:HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of women in society and was founded in 2014 by the UN Women. It’s goal is to achieve equality by not only influencing women and girls but men and boys as well to take action. For decades women have struggled with equality issues in all areas of society from the workplace, education, health, etc. It’s been a reoccurring problem that many young women have probably already faced because of the stereotypes that come with their gender.

In this project I want to focus on woman of all ages and their opinion of what they are NOT. With the combination or painting, video and text I hope to be able to make a piece that makes a statement. In my project I want to see if I can include woman of different nationalities as well, to be able to include different languages, for Gender Equality is an issue that is taking place worldwide.

Manifesto:

I was once told that I’m not capable of doing something right. Whether it was because of my gender or not I will never forget the feeling of hearing someone say that. I have watched woman be undermined and told how to speak, act, what to do and what not to do for years. Experiences have taught me that there are woman all over the world that have given up on their dreams. That’s because today our struggle has extended beyond the right to own property or to vote. Today a woman fights to be defined by her own intelligence and accomplishments, to be considered as an individual with her own actions and to be looked upon and given the same opportunities as men. Today we fight stereotypes, because we are strong, free and capable.
