Space +Materiality+Project#1

Project Description:

In this assignment we discover the personal symbol step by step. We have almost five week to enrich our goal. At first I find out what interest me a lot are the fashion designs from famous brand. I got inspiration from Alexander wang a lot. In the design of Alexander Wang, it is important to make every detail perfect, for example, the processing of the edges is very fine.

Inspired by: Alexander wang

That is the reason why I choose iron and lots of mental material as media to express this personal symbol. I wish to have Leather, cutout and metal elements in my designs.

“Black is the darkest color, the result of the absence or complete absorption of visible light. It is an achromatic color, literally a color without hue, like white and gray.[1] It is often used symbolically or figuratively to represent darkness, while white represents light.[2]

Black ink is the most common color used for printing books, newspapers and documents, because it has the highest contrast with white paper and is the easiest to read. For the same reason, black text on a white screen is the most common format used on computer screens.[3] In color printing it is used along with the subtractive primaries cyan, yellow, and magenta, in order to help produce the darkest shades.

Black and white have often been used to describe opposites; particularly truth and ignorance, good and evil, the Dark Ages versus Age of Enlightenment. Since the Middle Ages, black has been the symbolic color of solemnity and authority, and for this reason is still commonly worn by judges and magistrates.[2]

Black was one of the first colors used by artists in neolithic cave paintings. In the 14th century, it began to be worn by royalty, the clergy, judges and government officials in much of Europe. It became the color worn by English romantic poets, businessmen and statesmen in the 19th century, and a high fashion color in the 20th century.[2]

In the Roman Empire, it became the color of mourning, and over the centuries it was frequently associated with death, evil, witches and magic. According to surveys in Europe and North America, it is the color most commonly associated with mourning, the end, secrets, magic, force, violence, evil, and elegance.”

Inspiration: Alexander Wang like to use a lot of mental as decorative edge. So I expanded the material. I choose nuts as a main material.

Later on I created moodboard by getting more and more research and informations from website.

Here is the mood bored that I had created. I like to record my daily life. Thus, I used the pictures I like to make the starting point. I collected all kinds of pictures and sticked them on to a black cardboard and black is my favourite color. I wanted to find inspiration from it. later, I found that these pictures retains a lot vintage style, and they represent the past time. Thus, I want to make a theme about time, the time connected from past to present, from present to future. The future is what I am going to create.

There are some sketches that shows my characters.

Furthermore I develop them into 9 main picture to represent who I am as a designer,

Later I abstracted the 9 drawing into 6 ideas and finally I ended with 3 motifs.  Among all my facial expressions, I like my eyes the most. I analyze the elements of my eyes. I want to explore more of my world from my eyes.

I also gets interesting with chains. Chains actually are everywhere in my life. They comes from my handbags, clothes and they fit my hairstyle. Since they are made from metals, I think they can create a sense of future.

So at the end I decided to design a choker with a eye in the center. There is space and star around it. At first I want to have stars and moons as a pendant.

I made a 3-D model to get the accurate measurement. I used cardboard to get the rough look of my fianl product.

3D Model

This is the process of making the necklace. I use cardboard at first to make a model of it, so make sure of the size of my choker. After this, I use lots of hex nuts and connect them with wire to build up some elements of my choker. I used another nuts but of a bigger size to make the eyeball. I then used some flat washers and connect them to make the contour of the eye. This choker presents the idea of exploring the world, as I’m wearing it, it opens another version for me, and I believe eyes are the windows of one’s soul.

Here is an final version of my personal symbol.  I change is into necklace not a choker. I used wire and iron as base and lots of nuts be as the central point of the eyes.

Reflection:
To start my project, I did a lots of research about what I like. Most of my inspirations come from my daily life. I want to show my identity from my project. I made a mood board collecting pictures and colors I like. I found that the pictures I sticked on the board presents a vintage feeling and it just gives me the concept of time. I found the connection of past to present and finally to future. Past is already done, so I wanted to create future. Black is also my favourite color so that is the focal point of my project.
The most successful part in my project is the use of material I think. First of all, Alexander Wang is one of my favourite designers and he is very comfortable with using lots of metal materials to decorate his products. Also, since my theme will be related to future, I believe metal and the materials with low saturation will create the sense of  high end and connect to future life.
Later, I started to design the patterns of my product. I want to make a choker. I drew a lot of thumbnail sketches to show parts of my facial expression. Among them, I like my eyes the most because I think it can express the most emotions from a person. Also, it can also be the symbol of looking all the way to the future, like a means to break through time. Thus, I decided to make an eye and put it in the middle of my choker. I also designed a metal chain which I believe can enhance the feeling of future and uncertainty.
To make my choker, I bought lots of wire. I use golden wire to build the main structure of the choker just to build a little contrast with the eye in the middle. I twined the wire to make the structure and add multiple layer on it to make it stronger. It was quite complicated and thus I am now quite comfortable with using wires. I want to make my eye the most outstanding point in the whole product. I also bought some rivets to make the metal chain, to show the strength of the chain. Finally, I put some circles on it to decorate a little.
There is also space for me to improve myself. Although the material can represent my feeling and show the theme of connecting to the future, metals can be very biting when actually wearing it. Thus, I think next time, I need to take both the aesthetic appearance and practical function into account.
