Fabric in Fashion Exhibition at the Museum

The first piece I chose is the sheer polyester dress with rosettes by Yoshiki Hishinuma. It is a white dress with rose-like pink decorations around the top and the bottom part of the dress. The material of the dress is polyester, a kind of synthetic fibers. This material makes the whole dress looks very light and thin and adds a sense of delicateness overall. The design of the dress is elegant and the color fits in the composition of the dress. This dress reminds me of the fairies from fairytales.

The watercolor I used for my sketch is Ecoline Liquid Watercolors and Van Goah Solid Watercolor.

The second piece I chose is a synthetic metallic ruffled cape by Issey Miyake. It is a black cape with multiple ruffles which creates a sense of heaviness overall. Issey Miyake’s most featured element of his designs is the ruffles. Almost all of his clothes are made of ruffles, including this elegant piece. He used synthetic fibers and exquisite techniques to create this piece. The whole piece is simple except the ruffles which make the look of this dress very modern. Issey Miyake is really good at playing with various fibers.

Both of the two examples that I picked were from Japan. They both used synthetic fibers, but the feelings of the two pieces are completely different. First is the choice of color. The first one chose white and pink, but the second one chose only black. The first piece looks very light, and the second piece somehow contains a sense of heaviness. Of course, the form of the two pieces are different. The first one is a dress which include rose-like decorations, and the second one is a cape with simple ruffles.
