LP Journal Entry- Week 3

Observation

I always wonder whether acute observation is a skill one is born with or if it can be cultivated. I think probably both. I would consider myself to be a fairly observant person, although only in very certain areas- usually rather small, somewhat unimportant things rather than “big picture things.” I’m like observing little details, like the way the wheels turn on a bike or the way a mechanism clicks into place. I don’t like observing the time or news/current events. But I make myself observe these aspects of life because I think they are needed. However, I do think that my interest in small-scale observation can help me in the formulation of my “big picture” ideas, because even little observations give us insight into the way the world works. Although, I am always trying to enhance my observational skills in order to learn more about the world and how I fit into it. And after reading the piece about simultaneous perception, I am going to make even more of an effort to do so. I consider observation to be imperative in order for me to have a fulfilling life, especially because I want to work in the world of design, although blissful ignorance seems really attractive at times…
