Cindy created a collage to represent a question she had in union square. The foreground uses color and contains a “Welcome to Union Square” sign. The background is a black and white collection of images showing old advertisements. There is a compilation of many ads creating a patterns using repetition and, line and color or lack of color.
When noticing the elements in her work, the background images that are compiled together, work to balance the images and the text in the advertisements. I think there is a good use of balance and neither the text nor the images are too overwhelming or take charge over the other. In addition, I think the use of spot color was very successful in showing the foreground with more emphasis. After reading her statement and understanding what she wanted to question, the point of her piece comes through much clearer. Cindy was questioning how effective posters are at attracting attention and her use of color helped bring that point across in my mind.
When I first saw her work, I was reminded if the introduction of the old show “The Twilight Zone” I am unsure why this came to mind, however I think it could be related to the style of the old black and white advertisement posters placed in the background, and the one object in the foreground. Overall I think the whole piece just gave me the feeling of the intro to the show. I would recommend to watch the introduction to the show to gain inspiration regarding the use of patterns and black and white in her artwork.
