Initial Object Exploration

For my study I examined my iPhone 8 Plus. It is an all glass body, on the front and back. There is a camera that protrudes from the upper left-hand corner on the back of the phone. The glass bends towards the curves of the phone. There are 4 buttons. Home, Lock, Volume up, Volume Down. There is a volume rocker on the left side of the bezel on the phone. The screen is made of glass. The bezel wraps around the outside of the phone. With speakers and a charging port on the bottom. It is a black phone but has a bit more of apple’s space grey look to it. The glass on the back is very reflective. It is sleek in your hand due to the glass, but still feels nice.

My first question would be why the materials. Why make the back of the phone glass? It is obviously easier to break if dropped. It is a money-making design idea that leads customers to pay for apple care or have to pay apple to replace the screen or back of the phone. I also never understood the protruding camera. When Apple first did it on the apple 6/6s it was only done to aesthetically look like Samsung’s phone that year because their galaxy phone had a protruding camera due to it being a bigger camera. So now I wonder, can Apple fit their large iPhone plus camera into a flat back? Aesthetically it would be very pleasing to have an all flat phone that I don’t have to worry about breaking the camera as well as the back of it, if it is dropped.
