Integrative Studio: Museum Display

In this project, we showed the evolution of bras throughout the four important years

1950s:

Pointy bras were pointed circular stitched conical shaped bras that were made of nylon and provided the perfect pin up silhouette of a woman’s curves. Pointy bras were also known as bullet bras because the pinned up breasts were what made the breasts look pointy. Women were able to wear this bra under a soft blouse, a swing dress, or a crop top tie shirt. During this time period, pointy bras were the newest fashion style. Hollywood fashion and glamour influenced women’s fashion choices after the Second World War because all women wanted was glamour. Many of the Hollywood actresses like Marilyn Monroe, Lana Turner, and Patti Page inspired women to wear the bullet bras to help add a cup size to their bust and most importantly make women feel sexy in their body.

1960s:

During the 1960s, women become very aggravated at the way society was treating them because they saw women as only housewives, mothers, or sex objects. Therefore, women wanted to bring reform by ending this stereotype, so they began protesting for equal rights. At that same time, the Miss America Pageant was going on, which was all about beauty and the body. So, after the women contests realized that they started the Miss America Protest in which the women tossed their bras and high heels into the garbage and burned them. The movement was called the “Burning Bra Movement” because it represented the liberation from the oppression of the male patriarchy. During this time, many women also walked around braless publicly to show their freedom and how bras were a symbol of restrictions imposed by society.

1990s:

The Wonderbra was first trademarked in the U.S., but the brand was developed in Canada by the Canadian Lady brand. The redesigned pushup Wonderbra became a sensation in the U.K. and U.S. because they expanded from the single push-up design into a full lingerie label. At this time, brands shifted their focus from advertising functional and supportive bras to the foundation of lingerie and emphasizing fashion instead of basic fit and function. Lingerie became a huge sex-appeal for men after the Wonderbra. Wonderbras were said to be the greatest fashion invention because of its structure and the marketing sales it produced.

2016:

The bralette was the new sexy for women because it was designed to cover, not to support. It was introduced in the 1900s, but became more famous recently. A bralette is a thin, lacy or silk bra without underwire or molded cups. It is made of microfiber, lace, and cotton blend. Bralettes are very easy to make because they don’t require that much money and design. It’s more of a fashion statement for women because it allows them to freely express themselves. The bralette was also known as the “training bra” because at first it was designed for girls whose breasts weren’t large enough to fit an actual bra. However, later on the “training bras” were seen as an undergarment to make the body look sexier and more appealing and girls started to wear them as an outerwear rather than an undergarment.
