In this assignment, we had to create a body object that can be worn on your body in order to convey a feeling of connected/disconnected. This project focused on how we relate with others and develop a community in which we feel connected/disconnected to our surroundings. We had to focus on color, shape, form, and scale in order to formally and metaphorically express our idea. I chose to create a body object that communicates disconnection.
These are the four small Bristol models I made of the six collapsible systems.
Then, I had to use one or two of the collapsible structures to make a body object that would indicate connection and/or disconnection. The image on the right shows connection and the image on the left shows disconnection.
I chose to do the body object that conveyed disconnection. So, I made my first life-size model out of chipboard. I made the choker piece, which communicated the feeling of choking and discomfort when I’m around people that I can’t relate to. Then, I added the sliding collapsible structure to the choker piece to show when I’m really uncomfortable around a person, I start having butterflies in my stomach or a nervous breakdown. So, the discomfort goes down to my stomach. Therefore, I pull the sliding collapsible structure down, but when I’m not that uncomfortable, the collapsible structure stays closed.
This is my final part of the project. I recreated the same model, but I used red vinyl for the accordion collapsible structures and white stryle paper for the sliding collapsible structure. I chose the color red because it shows discomfort and blood.
