I created the collages featured above for a journal assignment based off of the exhibition: Elegance in the Age of Crisis. This exhibit was held at the FIT Museum and showcased men and women’s clothing from the 1930s. Although the United States was going through hard economic times that did not show in the clothing designs. In fact, quite the opposite. Many people during the Depression turned to Hollywood and film as a form of escapism. The red dress that I collaged is an interpretation of a dress at the exhibit designed by Adrian. I collaged an illustration of the dress that he designed for Joan Crawford in the movie The Bride Wore Red (1937.)
