Above are process pictures of my self portrait.
I decided that I wanted to collage myself because it is the medium that I feel represents my personality best. I had a friend trace the outline of my body on a piece of foam board and started to play around with images that I felt represented me. I chose images from magazines, books, and personal photos to use for the collage. I chose many images with an urban vibe such and I used those images to create an outer armor for myself. I believe that as humans we are all guarded at times and our “armor” does not necessarily represent our true selves. At the center of my chest I collaged images that I felt were the most true about me. I collaged pictures of my friends, family, New York City, and images that represented my creativity. The piece ended up looking like a video game warrior (according to one of my classmates) which I rather like. My self portrait is a commentary on how I perceive myself, how the outside world perceives me, and what truly lies beneath the surface. I wholeheartedly believe that people are much more that what they seem.
