My first project for my Soft Structures class was to make an “unwearable garment.” All of the students were tasked to rip apart a garment that they wanted to recreate in unwearable materials. I took apart one of my beloved sweatshirts and then used the pieces to recreate the pattern for my new garment. I decided that I wanted to use magazine paper as the material for my new sweatshirt. I started by sewing together magazine pages in order to make my own “textile.” I decided to keep the new paper sweatshirt graphic just as the original sweatshirt had been. I chose to only choose black, white, or grey images to keep a strong consistent look throughout the unwearable sweatshirt.
