Although the format I have selected to convey my concept is Body Armor/Accessory, I went to visit galleries which dealt with Interior design. This is because I wanted to acquire inspiration for the textural surface of my potential garment, concentrating mainly on shapes and materials I could use. I was particularly intrigued by the models for the ARCHXXX, the BKM and the Sushi Teria. Once perceived on a figure, the sharpness of these shapes could possibly emphasize the concealment of the true self at the expense of hurting others.  Similarly, creating the dress out of such geometric shapes could potentially achieve the distortion of the body, making the garment act as physical “façades,” which somewhat obliterates the features of the woman’s body. This approach can be further interpreted as a direct reference to how women in today’s society use fashion as an embellishing and self-obliterating device as a means to conform to the kind of woman that men are purported to desire, hence destroying their individuality. Furthermore, the imposingness of this triangular pattern could add a sense of empowerment to the underlying figure, along with her protection against the fashion industry’s conception of beauty.

This piece reminded me of one of McQueen’s most celebrated shows, the Voss Show, which was my principal source of inspiration for my final project. In this show, McQueen forces the viewers to confront their own reflections onto a large reflective plexiglass box in the middle of the runway. This way, McQueen reduces the observers to observed “objects”, turning their scrutinizing gazes back to themselves in order to highlight how objectified the models have become in today’s society and how they are now used merely as decorative details added to enhance garments. Likewise, my garment will be devised out of blue, silver and gold mirrored plexiglass in order to convey the struggle between façade and interiority.

I like to think critically about art’s role in today’s society: the way it is used for communicating experience, issues and how it stimulates personal interaction and imagination.
