Work Edits

As soon as we began building the base for the installation out of cardboard, we came to the realization that this first step would be much more time consuming than we understood. Furthermore, the white acrylic paint with which we started to paint the cardboard got excessively absorbed by its surface, suggesting that a much greater amount of paint was required in order to fully mask it. Although at first we considered covering the steps with long strips of white paper (a purchase which would remain within our budget), we, keeping in mind the time limit during which we must complete the project, finally decided to abandon the initial strategy of building a staircase and, instead, began to search for an existent one within the University Center onto which a bight natural light would expand. Fortunately, we found a white staircase with the exact characteristics we were looking for. It was adjacent to a wide fenestration, creating a bright space, and surrounded by white walls and surfaces, which further reflected the light throughout the entire room. Immediately, we began to secure a layer of cardboard onto the entire edge of the second step with Scotch Tape, forming a projecting surface, which partially enclosed and obscured the last step of the staircase. Since the steps of the staircase were considerably stained, we covered them with three strips of white paper of equal dimensions, deliberately excluding the superficies below the extending layer of cardboard, which reverberated the state of the objects toping them. Once the set was completed, we carefully began placing, firstly the items pertaining to the lower caste in such a manner as to give them a chaotic and disintegrated quality, and then those referring to the higher caste onto and above the extruding layer of cardboard, across the upper steps of the coated staircase.

What is different about working in a group compared to working individually?

Working in a group certainly brings major benefits to the creation of a piece of art in that it raises a number of different suggestions and perspectives on the issue at hand. Sometimes, this can be troublesome as individuals in the group might not agree on the same ideas, but for the most part, it allows for a wide range of proposal from which to choose. In fact, there is greater speed and clarity when working individually with respect to decision making and implementing, as the individual is very on his/her goals where I often had difficulties understanding what my teammates were thinking. This would allow work to proceed much quicker. However, as far as the process of construction and creation is concerned, working individually would definitely have slowed things down. Particularly during the process of covering the staircase with white paper and cardboard, we were able to divide tasks efficiently. Moreover, teamwork allows for a better time management and a more efficient method of completing an assignment, as instead of having single person in charge of the entire collection of both familiar and unfamiliar tasks, not only can jobs be assigned according to the individuals’ expertise, but inexperienced students can be further assisted by more proficient ones.

I like to think critically about art’s role in today’s society: the way it is used for communicating experience, issues and how it stimulates personal interaction and imagination.
