Postcards from the Future

Shanghai has a major pollution problem when it comes to the environment. While Beijing held the highest pollution rates out of all of China, in recent years, Shanghai has surpassed Beijing and became one of the highest pollution emitting cities. As Shanghai’s GDP increased, the process of urbanization has increased in speed. Due to the pollution, the air temperature in the city has rose and had a decrease in humidity and wind speed. While the Chinese government has added bans and restrictions in Beijing to prevent excessive C02 and toxic gases being let out into the atmosphere, Shanghai has yet to be regulated.

Although the Chinese government have started regulating Shanghai, I don’t think it would have the same effect as Beijing. Beijing is the capital of China but in recent years, Shanghai has grown massively in population and power. China has set bans in not being able to use coal in households and started enforcing the idea of recycling to citizens. Although the bans and the recycling helps with the problem, it doesn’t necessarily attack the most crucial cause of the pollution. The big industries and companies that hold the most power are still letting out toxic gasses into the air and finding loopholes to avoid the bans and restrictions.
