‘Travelling’ Response: Experience + Meaning

Response to Grace Paley’s essay ‘Travelling.’

I found this article touching as Paley drew together two historical anecdotes, relating her experiences to those of her mother’s. Travelling forces strangers into tight quarters for extended periods of time, so it is interesting observing how interactions occur and how small gestures can have the largest influence. Though Paley did not know the stranger on her journey, she took from her own influences, upbringing, and caring nature and acted kindly rather than passively. She resisted segregation, not by adding fuel to the negative, argumentative side, but by encouraging positive actions and displaying her opinion with kindness.
