James A. Farley Post Office
History:
- The building was built based on the Forum of Rome, including the colonnades, pilasters and the two sets of façades facing each others.
- People decided to build the post office in a Roman style to balance and make harmony of style with the Penn Station, which was located next to the office.
- The building was built in 1913 and cost 5.275 million dollars.
- The post office was the largest office in the country at that time period.
- During the Great Depression, the size of the office has doubled by the order of Postmaster General James A. Farley, which extended the length of the building up to 9th avenue. (It was named after the postmaster).
