Anthropocene Journal 2: Monuments for the Anthropocene

Part 1 :

A new clock has been established in Union Square, Manhattan. The two artists, Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd, have measured and came up with new numbers for the Metronome. The numbers now represent the remaining time for earth due to global warming. The newly programmed digital clock conveys the message that “The Earth has a deadline”. Global warming is taking place all over the planet even during the silent war with Corona 19. I think we should no longer overlook the record-breaking heat wave and the typhoon news that becomes more and more powerful every year. I feel like it is time to make efforts to stop the spread of global warming. This is not a personal matter, but a matter that the whole world should participate in. In that sense, this work had a great influence on me. I believe that the metronome affected not only for me, but for everyone. 7 years 103 days 15 hours 40 minutes and 7 seconds was less time than I thought that it came as a shock to me. Moreover, I think it’s a great idea having it displayed so well in a place where numerous people come and go every day. I hope that many people look at the clock, reflect on themselves, and contribute more to the environment.

Part 2 :

“Untangle”

This public sculpture will be enormous. I think in order to raise public awareness of climate change, the sculpture itself has to be eye cathching. The artwork will be in mixed colored, but mostly dark colors. Also, the shape of it looks like a lump of dust, which is linked with air pollution. If air pollution continues, the sky won’t be clear anymore, but rather will be cloudy. Also, the sculpture has a form of tangled strings to show the reality of the earth. I wanted to express all the damage caused by climate change and it’s twisted situation. For example, as the Earth’s temperature rises, sea water levels will rise as icebergs in Antarctica and the North Pole melt. As sea levels rise, many cities like New York, close to the world’s oceans, can sink into the ocean. This case is very difficult to untangle, but the thing is there are a lot more cases happening due to climate change. However, it’s important that we prevent the spread of damages. It is necessary for everyone to “untangle” this situation for the sake of Earth.
