Fourth Anthropocene Journal: Our Stuff

Recently, I bought these pair of earrings from Cos. The product is called “Sterling Silver Stud Earrings” and is made of 100 % sterling silver. It was made in India and has completed Nickel, a chemical element that is a silver-white metal, test. The shape of the product is angular stud and has a butterfly fastening at the back. The product has no size and is recycled silver. In addition, it has a subtle design for every season.

There won’t be any energy used during its lifetime for the object unless more silver is added. According to research, the average primary energy required to produce silver, known as its embodied energy, which is the energy that is consumed in order to build a given usable object, is relatively high compared to other metals, at 1500 MJ/kg. I don’t know the exact weight of the product, but it would be much less than a kg. Unless one wants a new design, which would require more use of silver, there won’t be more energy used to recycle, dispose or reuse the object.

Newly designed object :

I believe that in order to be more sustainable, the earrings have to be a timeless design, so that it won’t be thrown away as waste. Even though the product itself has a simple design, I think that hoop earrings will always be the classic style.
