Recycled Replica of Subway Station Artwork

I had an initial idea that I wanted to make a replica of the artwork of the midnight blue mosaic wall, but when I sat down to start I didn’t see how my materials that I had gathered could turn into the mosaic wall. I tried and tried, but instead I ended up deciding to make a replica of one of the windows in the subway station.

STEP 1

I chose to use a folder that I found. I had been inspired by the artist who cut out trees from retail bags, and wanted to incorporate the same idea or at least elements from it into my replica.

STEP 2

Next step I traced over one of the maps and cut it out of the folder. Now I had the outer line similar to the artwork at Smith – 9th Street.

STEP 3

But then I felt that the green traces of the map didn’t really reflect that this was indeed the map on the window, I wanted another material. I chose to use recycled straw papers, that I rolled up and pushed to go into the direction of the map tracing. I stuck the papers to the back of the folder with tape. To represent a window, which in reality gives a blurry visual effect, I chose to use the straws which I also used tape to stick it to the folder.

STEP 4

I then finally chose to use a marker on the straw paper to give them a more true feeling towards the real artwork, and I started to incorporate the depth number on the map by using cut-out numbers from a Red Bull can. I saved more material from the Red Bull can because I’m thinking of using the bug blue areas to replace the straw papers. This would be even more true to the real artwork, since it has a prismatic effect with its silver reflective ink.
