The Mayor, Bill De Blasio, has announced that East Harlem is one of the communities that is set to be rezoned to facilitate building more affordable housing. The proposed changes is part of the mayor’s plan to add 80,000 units of affordable housing in 10 years. One of the proposed changes is called “Mandatory Inclusionary Housing”, which forces new developments within the rezoning areas to include affordable housing based on the AMI (Area Median Income) of all the boroughs that are included.. Although, the problem is that the AMI for all the zones is much higher than what is in East Harlem. This will leave a lot of people that need affordable housing out-of-reach for these accommodations.
East Harlem residents are now urging their community board to reject city-wide zoning changes aimed at increasing affordable housing, fearing that the changes would drive them out of East Harlem. This infographic tries to explain the situation right now and what the outcomes might be for the residents that live in East Harlem.
