Pattern Man: Coloring Book

The second project we’ve done in Drawing/Imaging: People is a coloring book. We are asked to use patterns from all cultures to produce a Baroque style coloring book. This requires tons of research and a lot of Illustrator practice.

I personally divide this project into three parts: sketches and research, illustrator, color use.

  1. Sketches and research:

Everything started with drawing a model in class. The first scan above is the outcome. The model would be the center piece of the project since every student had to include the model into the coloring book. Later on, I started on the research of patterns. I was very careful about the research because I had to consider what patterns actually goes along with the Baroque paintings I’ve chosen as the other three pages of the coloring book. In the end, I decided to choose some cultural patterns that were geometric to fit my own style.

2. Illustrator:

Before working in Illustrator, I chose three famous Baroque paintings including Girl with The Pearl Earings. The first step was to sketch the image out and then scan them into my laptop so later on I can create clear images in Ai. The 4th image above is the pattern page that is done in Illustrator as well. These patterns are applied to the paintings to create coloring spaces. Working with Illustrator in this project was not as hard as I thought.

3. Color Use:

(Somehow the colors of uploaded files are very different from the original ones)

I was also responsible for creating the covers for my group. The last image above was the first one I made, but the title was very hard to read and not everyone’s work is included. I completed the final version in class (which is the 3rd image above). I’ve done some research on Baroque colors and my colored pattern swatches really mixed a sense of classic Baroque with a modern understanding of patterns. The cover pages are  the hardest part of this project since I have to include all works in my group while thinking about the layout.
