Portrait Of A Place

For this project I chose Stuyvesant Square Park.  I’ve lived right next to this park for almost 9 months now and I walked past it ten thousand times. Somehow I never noticed  it. It was only recently that I realized how beautiful the park was.

Photographs

What I noticed was that the dominant colors were red, green, brown, grey and pink. I decided to incorporate them in my project.  Because it was raining all day the park was quiet and empty which I really enjoyed. It’s rare not to be surrounded by people in New York.

Sketches

In my quick sketches I  focused on the building surrounding the park. But in my final work I created something more abstract and I didn’t include the buildings.

Collages/ Small scale mockups

The collages were created from pictures of the tress and cherry blossoms on a pavement. I ripped small pieces from the photographs and assembled them   on  page. Later I scanned them and edited in Photoshop. The same shapes were used many times to achieve a sense of balance and  repetitiveness.  At the same time I broke the form by using negative space and small triangular shapes.
