Core Studio 2d: Project 2 Abstract

Project 2:Abstract

Project 2 is a progression of the concepts explored in the large scale drawing. I would like to further examine the notion of lived experience and its relationship to one’s conjured thoughts. In considering memory’s relationship to dreams, I am drawn to investigate the relevance of distinguishing one from the other. Ultimately, despite real or unreal, these ideas become stored in the mind and emerge from the subconscious, thus both real and imagined coexist in a singular space. Subsequently, everything becomes a memory whether it is lived or imagined. Therefore, this next piece explores the timelessness in a singular space where dream and memory exist; a space that is apart from reality, yet holds some semblance of the physical world. In conceptualizing this next work, I am captivated by one specific scene within a forest from my childhood. This particular part of the trail is dense with tangled branches and an impenetrable umbrella of leaves. There is a singular severed tree trunk with five thinner tree trunks growing out of it, appearing as roots growing upwards and reaching towards the sky, rather than down beneath the soil. There is also a separate mangled tree trunk growing horizontally out of the soil; both tree trunks seemingly in conversation with one another. This scene has always remained in my memory as a surrealistic and dream-like space. Inspired by this scene, I plan to create a fragmented painting on canvas to depict a passage between memory and dreams through the use of 2d painting and collected branches and logs from the actual site. Both 2d and 3d elements will interact with one another as the collected material is weaved throughout the painting and laid at the foot of the canvas. My recreation of the scene within the forest is a visual reinterpretation of the space based on personal lived experience and memory integrated with a veneer of dreamlike imagination.
