Details Summary of Part 1-3 and Prototype Development: Studio 2 Final

1) Design a system (of any scale) that addresses the research question you’ve developed in your Integrative Seminar class. Write a summary of your selected system:  Explain ALL of the below:

  • What is your research question?
      • How can information about the effects of intergenerational trauma be communicated to people who knowingly or unknowingly are affected by it?
  • What the system is you’re designing around, and what is your point of intervention?  (Are you creating a new system?  Adapting or intervening with an existing one)
      • I plan to design a toolkit of components necessary to create a group that helps destigmatize mental health issues. The goal would be to inform students about the impact of intergenerational trauma as a means of the first contact with the awareness of its influence and potential mental health treatment or self-care. This tool would be interjected in the current system of aid at the Student Health center as a non-clinical first point of contact for students who want to be informed or are not sure if they want to seek help.
  • What is the purpose of this system?
      • The purpose of this system is to inform students about the effect of intergenerational trauma, as well as be a sustained resource for information on the services provided by Student Health Service. Thus helping to destigmatize mental health issues associated with trauma. This toolkit I would design to create this group would include the components needed for it to be created.
  • Who and what will be impacted?
      • Anyone who would be related to the creation of this group or influenced by this group. This includes organizational members of the Student Health Center, Student Health Advocates, and students who would be engaging with this organized group.
  • How will they be impacted?
      • My intended audience would be impacted on multiple levels as there are different groups of people it would be interacted with in different ways:
        • Would be engaging with the group that this kit aims to create as a means of knowing what students are interested in having developed in Student Health Services. They would also be in charge of facilitating any information on the logistics and approval of outreach events.
        • In charge of either composing this group or conducting the outreach for this group or helping to facilitate the creation of this group.
        • Student Health Advocate would be impacted in the sense that this system would allow them to know more about the student bodies interests and needs. They would then be able to communicate this to organizers at Student Health Services.
        • This group of people would be impacted in the sense that this toolkit is designed to create a group to help facilitate conversations and learning about mental health as a means to seeking help and becoming a more informed member of the community.
        • Organizers at Student Health Services:
        • Student Health Advocates:
        • Students:
  • How does this system relate to your research question?
      • This system relates directly to my research question: How can information about the effects of intergenerational trauma be communicated to people who knowingly or unknowingly are affected by it?
      • This is because it is a kit of the components necessary to create and outreach group that has as a task to inform and destigmatize the use of the Student Health Center as a resource.

2) Create a prototype of that system.

  • The system comprises of a document that outlines the system:
    • How it would work
    • The elements
      • Predesigned information about intergenerational trauma (video/ website/ social media)
      • Proposed interaction with students (events/ how to develop presence)
    • Topical infographic of how this system works
    • Each element of the infographic would then be explained in a separate subsection of the document.

3) Create a strategy to engage your intended audience with the prototype in meaningful ways.

  • Who is your audience?
      • My intended audience would be impacted on multiple levels as there are different groups of people it would be interacted with in different ways:
        • Would be engaging with the group that this kit aims to create as a means of knowing what students are interested in having developed in Student Health Services. They would also in charge of facilitating any information on the logistics and approval of outreach events.
        • This group of people would be impacted in the sense that this toolkit is designed to create a group to help facilitate conversations and learning about mental health as a means to seeking the help of becoming a more informed member of the community.
        • Organizers at Student Health Services
        • Student Health Advocates
        • Students
  • Why?
          • I want to target people from these groups as my intended audience because I think for this toolkit to be properly assessed it would require the input from different groups who would be working with and would be impacted by its existence.
  • What would a meaningful sample size be?
      • A meaningful sample size would be 6-7 people:
        • 1 organizer at SHS
        • 1-2 Student Health Advocates
        • 3-4 Students of varying interest in self-care and using SHS
  • How will you reach them?
      • Organizer at SHS: I plan to reach out to them by email, social media or where possible in person by sending or physical have them go through my prototype and have them answer questions.
      • When and where?
        • I would like to begin this process by April 21st at the latest. For people I would talk to in person I would most likely just approach them on campus most likely around the cafe.
  • How will you ensure that they engage successfully with your prototype?
      • By explaining what the prototype as a disclaimer before they begin interacting with the information or designed system.
      • If this the interaction is digital I would write it in the email as well as have it on the front page of the presented document.
      • If it is an interaction that is done in person I will tell them about it as well as have it written on the first page of the document.
  • How will you document this engagement?
        • I plan to document my engagement through written feedback.
        • If it is electronic it would have to be written.
        • If it is in person I will ask if I can record their reaction and feedback or if they would rather write it out.
        • Required preparation?
          • Figure out who it is I need to contact
          • Have my prototype fully completed
          • Have specific and open-ended questions to help guide feedback
          • Have a part dedicated to suggestions for improvements
