For our project, we were to create a garment that hides the identity of the wearer. With this concept of anonymity, I started thinking about the stereotype of girls being quiet personalities who do not stress their individuality. Throughout culture, it is the outside appearance that matters, but to comply with one beauty standard. So, I made a “paper doll” dress that covers the face, especially the mouth, to signify silence.
I took this bubble wrap that was used in a shipment and cut them into strips and carefully wove them together, using the front and backs to create an alternating pattern. I also made an extra purse.
I had fun making this piece. Right now I’m limited in materials but I can imagine taking this technique and elevating it in the future.
