100 objects stop motion animation

Photograph 100 objects that you had brought with you to New York. Using Adobe Premiere, create a stop motion animation considering the following:

  • What is your set-up? Are you in the frame?
  • Be careful how you construct your composition – rule of thirds
  • What objects are important to you? Why?
  • We will add these images to a timeline in Premiere and create a stop-motion animation
  • What sound or music will be used? Any?

Process-

To set up the frame, I draped my bedsheets on one of the dorm chairs and set my phone and tripod on another chair opposite of it. I collected my favorite things- glossier makeup, gifts from friends, polaroid memories… I didn’t bring many novelty items with me as I had a limit to one check-in and one carry luggage for the flight, so by the end, I was resorting to pictures of paint tubes of different colors. However, this part was my favorite, as it looked like the tubes were changing color in the video. Playing with the order, I tried to have them correlate with each other. For example, in the silverware section, I tucked in hair pluckers, eyelash curlers, and nail clippers to juxtapose with the knife, fork, and spoon. Regarding the sound, I knew I wanted something quirky and candid to match the tone of the photos. I made three recordings: one was me talking about the objects, another was an imaginary conversation with my mom fussing about what to bring and what not to bring, and another audio of clicking my tongue on the roof of my mouth. I’m happy with how they came together, and there is still a trail of my voice as the screen blackens.

Reflection-

I’ve always admired cinematography and wished I had the lifestyle of a travel Youtuber. However, I was aware that video editing is no simple task and these artists put in lots of time into creating content. This project was a great push for me to familiarize with the basics of Premiere which I found extremely helpful. Of course, I’m still limited in my editing abilities, but I appreciated being walked through the process by my teacher. I hope to be able to improve the quality of my videos and experiment more.
