A doll that provides a hint of gold stands, in a posture of elegance and refined couture and looked down with open arms. The gawn of the doll was like a lustered skin with embodied hair qualities of the pattern. The coat was made with a glimpse of sunlight fur, providing warmth for the doll. The back round was painted with a peaceful muted blue, brown, and green, depicting the silence of nature in the scene.

The photo above was one of Christian Dior’s inspiration for her couture collection, and this is a doll from the exhibition – Theatre de la mode. Théâtre de la Mode was a fashion exhibition that toured from Europe then to the United States between 1945–1946. Fashion was once considered a huge center of economic income for France, however, the huge impact from wartime restrictions did provide damage to the industry. Nearly 70 registered couture had a huge impact on their fashion business, some of the small ones even closed down during the war. Théâtre de la Mode highlights the important fashion force from France during World War II and aiming to raise funds in support of the French Fashion industry after the war. It became a touring exhibition of 237 doll-size figurines in 15 elaborate artist-created sets and attracted more than 100,000 visitors and millions of wartime relief.

The relationship between Dior and the Théâtre de la Mode was not only bonded during WWII it also stretches until nowadays. After World War II, soldiers are returning home, so does the history of couture that returned back from France. The culture of course came back in the 1950s along with the founding brand of Dior, where forms of long skirts and elegancy were again appreciated by Dior’s garment. From Dior in 1950 to the present, the heritage of couture was then recreated with a surrealist version of Théâtre de la Mode and was presented for 2020-2021 Haute Couture.

The beauty of Théâtre de la Mode and the mini-dolls can be so special for Dior as one of the hints for couture fashion, and it wasn’t only just dolls with costumes, but also dolls that reflect the rise and fall of couture in the fashion industry.
