LP Reflection

My name is Sujin Oh and I am currently in the Communications Design major. I was born in South Korea but I moved to Shenzhen, China when I was six months old. I moved around twice until I graduated highschool from Hong Kong. Now I am attending Parsons in New York City. I am particularly interested in digital art, typography and advertising art.

I believe that the there were several themes that emerged in many several different courses. I think that themes like memory, sensory, visual culture was present in many of the courses. I learned skills like being able to write a research paper. I learned how to use different materials and sources to write papers to make artworks. I used a variety of different  A skill that I learned and utilized in another was how to use the help provided by the school. For instance I thought that the learning center was extremely helpful. I thought that the research paper was interesting because I wrote about a topic that I would only talk about. I never had the opportunity to dig deeper into the subject. A skill that I utilized on every single project was the ability to correctly make progress reports and note down my process. I thought that it was important to make adjustments accordingly and take down progress sketches and notes. I think that going back to peer reviews and going to professors really helped.

The two highlights of my year was, the research paper- I really enjoyed writing the research paper because I have never written a chicago style research paper with footnotes. I think that it was a good learning experience. I really enjoyed making use of the learning center to learn about how I could improve my writing. Before this research paper I was not confident in my abilities to write. Also, initially I thought that research papers were going to extremely tedious and challenging. However, the resources that I used in seminar helped me write my outline and my final research paper. I think that the readings given really helped me be able to start writing my paper. I think that the Craft of Research materials was helpful in many ways. Even though some of the readings were hard to finish and understand, the overall concept helped me write my paper. My paper was about errors in Asian beauty ideals and how it has become too extreme.

Final Research Paper (2)-26m2b74

Another project that made me learn more about my talent and the reason why I am at Parsons was in my Typography class. I think that the Bronx Zoo poster project was what I was interested in my major initially. I think that the process was interesting to research. I had to make an animal using the letters that made up the word. I made a poster for the Bronx Zoo using a flamingo, peacock and a salmon. I think that over the course of this project there were three different critiques and each one I have received different feedbacks that have helped me in the end.

In the future I would like to learn how to write more papers in the manner that we use the learning center more. I really enjoyed the use of peer reviews and feedbacks because it helped me improve my ideas. This not only helped me in writing, but also in my other projects. I also found that participating became easier for me to do after the critiques. I think that in the future I would like to ask how I could take the skills I currently have to push myself forwards.

I believe that one project could help each other because in every single project, writing down the process and making sketches and models of the final piece really helps review and reflect. I think that skills that I want in the future is better time management skills. I think that in Communication design time management is crucial because the communication world is changing.
