Gallery Visit

The gallery I chose to write about was the show “Forever Wild.” The first piece I noticed
was the wooden sculpture of the rabbit-duck illusion. I especially liked this piece because the
invitations Daina handed out in class referenced the sculpture and felt specially curated. The
continuation and blending of the shape and colors of the wood also played together making it
more engaging to the eyes. The use of the mirror as the water puddle adds to the engagement
because the viewer is able to see themselves. I also enjoyed how the mirror as a puddle
connected the piece with the mirrors frames with sand instead of glass. The mirrors with the sand
added a personal touch to the gallery because of the timeliness of the artwork and the unique
view of the piece for each person. It also reminded me of the never ending kids oil drop toys
while also seeming to reference sand timers.
Additionally, I enjoyed viewing “Field Study” because I visited the gallery with Avishi
and Veronica and we were able to discuss the use of pragnanz and closure as well as the
repetition of the patterns. Being displayed in a grid format emphasizes the continuation of
patterns and shapes throughout the piece. I was particularly fascinated by this piece because of
the detail dedicated towards the painted patterns and the decisions made toward organizing the
patterns in a way that creates contrast while still being balanced. For the writing of this
reflection, I visited the High Noon website and after reading the description, the title of the
exhibition makes much more sense and the layering of the animals and the close proximity of the
flowers that overlay them seems very personal. Overall, I really enjoyed this exhibition because
of the repetition of images, whether it be within the artwork itself or a similar piece such as the
mirror with sand being placed in multiple locations within the space.
