Open Works: Since it’s raining

My film centers around the idea and perception of time and its relativity to the situation and surroundings.

Originally I wanted to create a film that explored the daylight savings and overdramatize the problems it causes to many people. However as I began to film, I was more fascinated by the mundane daily tasks that we have no other option but to give up our time to; such examples explored in the film include waiting for the elevator and commuting across the city. The weekend I started filming, it rained nonstop and I was given the opportunity to showcase my rather impromptu filming. Although I organized a set list, the inclusion of the weather and environment works to release the responsibility on the viewer and leave it up to the universe in a similar way to the human relationship with time.

The repetition of scenes like the elevator showcase the common sacrifice of waiting to arrive at ones destination. By focusing on the process of arriving at a destination but never showing the end result, I aimed to create a more vague but relatable piece. Wider angle shots of timelapse contrast the slow feeling but real time speed of elevators and explore the relationship they have with each other. Focusing on the mundane allowed me to shift my focus from purely subject matter to the communication and display of such tasks and experiences.

In the future, I would love to work more with a DSLR camera and capture higher quality videos and experiment with water and time. I am more interested in still photography and it would be fascinating to show progression in a series of images rather than a video.
