Expansion into Space

Utilizing the analog and digital tools learned throughout this course you will create a work that exhibits how you envision expansion into space.

I also looked to shows that incorporate a dog character either as a sidekick or a main character. For example, in the movie Bolt, the focus is on the dog and him being unaware of the real human world around him as they film a movie. Although at the start of the movie the dog is deceived in a way that humans wouldn’t appreciate to be done to themselves, it is eventually realized the importance of treating dogs with respect.

Originally stemming from the book Animal Farm by George Orwell as inspiration, I wanted to create advertisements that would be displayed in an alternate society where dogs has taken over.

However, after further thought, I shifted my focus to be more of a commentary on the current incorporation of dogs into the workforce and the future of that industry.

Dogs are starting to be more commonly seen in the workforce, we see them at the airport checking for drugs, at hospitals providing emotional support, and it is unclear where else we will soon see them.

Through my project I wanted to explore the irony around dogs being incorporated into the workplace doing jobs that are physically impossible for humans, while also serving as a reminder to not grow too dependent. I also thought it was interesting to note that although in certain aspects dogs are more capable, we don’t see them on the same level as humans.

For my posters, I started by watercolor painting seven different dogs to put on each poster.

I then scanned all the watercolor paintings so I could upload them to photoshop to add text and complete the poster. On photoshop I played with curves and cleaned up the images so I could then add colored backgrounds and establish a color scheme.

I also experimented with fonts to strengthen the compositions.

The final presentation of my posters includes printouts of each individual poster and printout of billboard mock ups.

Overall I enjoyed this project and the creative freedom it provided. While doing the final revisions of the posters and the text, I started leaning towards a more activist mentality. I’m not exactly sure whether the intended audience would be the dogs or the humans being warned one final time and I think it adds to the mysteriousness of the context in which it is being displayed.
