Artist Statement:
Within my bedroom, the unnecessary hoardings of paper bags cluttered up my space. Rather than throwing them all away, I used them as the primary material for this project to physically incorporate a fragment of my room into this piece. The night before sitting in my room and observing, I do a similar thing within my piece, most of the paper bags in my room were ripped and crinkled preventing them from getting reused; however instead of trying to return them to their former glory- like my room, I purposefully soaked, ripped, and crumpled the bags to make this piece. By intentionally destroying the original context of the bags, they are separated from the connotations and possible correlations a viewer can make with them. By doing so I also separate myself from the final outcome the memories of my room. I chose to illustrate a tree to emphasize the irreversible yet sustainable process regarding paper making and paper using that I believe will go on until trees stop growing. Captured within a shoe box stripped of all the identifying labels I wanted to play with the idea of not knowing what is within a space until you are physically there and allowing yourself to make the most out of it.
