Bridge 4: Homecoming: Returning the Canvases

Homecoming: Returning the Canvases

Dimensions: 20 x 24

Medium: Acrylic, Wood

Artist Statement:

Museums are highly dependent on artifacts and paintings from all around the world and boast about having large collections of these relics regardless of how they were acquired. This painting depicts a scene inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where all the paintings are blank, envisioning a reality where paintings and artifacts are rightfully repatriated. I chose to include the frames of the paintings to prove that just because the paintings inside them are repatriated, history is not lost. Although this painting is done in acrylic, it mimics the more traditional oil painting styles prevalent in 18th-century Europe, which would typically be displayed in such spaces. Being framed just like paintings seen at the museums further adds to the surreality of the painting and the scene depicted within.
