FOR COMRADES & LOVERS

Migration is the movement from one region to the other. It is foundationed on change. This period of time in our lives is full of changes–entering college for the first time, moving to a new country, a new city, or even a new area is the city, etc. Glenn Ligon’ commissioned work, “For Comrades and Lovers,” employed Walt Whitman’s famous poem, Starting from Paumanok.

Paumanok, meaning Long Island, is the place where Whitman was born and raised. I find it interesting how Ligon titled his work: in this great migration from our high school years, we become comrades at the New School. And lovers too. We were brought together due to our passions and shared love.
